Leadercast Series – Henry Cloud
Great things come from positive disruption.
Henry Cloud, one of this year’s Leadercast speakers, argues that disruption is not only normal but also beneficial in achieving something better.
And disruption happens in our lives all the time.
Moving from preschool to kindergarten is a disruption. Moving from highschool to college is a disruption. Changing from a good job to a better job is disruption.
The factor that seems to remain the same between all of these changes is a reluctance to move through what Henry calls “necessary endings.”
The idea of ending something, even if we know something better is on the other side of it, probably scares us more than we’d like to admit. As a leader, I feel this fear even more, especially when my decisions directly affect my team members.
But Henry’s argument is that we should be continually asking ourselves and our teams, “Why do we do this?” It’s important to not just make decisions and continue doing things the way they have always been done simply for the sake of ease or tradition. If we don’t expand our horizons and push our comfort zones, we won’t discover the better opportunities that are often just around the corner.
Henry believes we are in a constant state of “pruning” – the mechanism through which these necessary endings occur. This is a process my team is always trying to master. It isn’t easy to stop doing something you have always done, but it is essential if you’re looking to move from good enough to great.
One of my favorite parts of Henry’s speech was an interruption from his dog barking that ironically happened right as he made the statement “disruption is normal.” The realness of that statement really hit home for me, and I believe resonates with most people, especially in the crazy times we’re currently living in.
Once we learn to see disruption as a means to an end, we will begin to embrace and appreciate it rather than running from these necessary endings.
What necessary endings have you been putting off that you and your team can embrace during this time?
