Comeback Stories – Bethany Hamilton

May 12, 2020

The stories that inspire us the most often started as moments of complete loss and frustration.

This was the case for Bethany Hamilton, a 13 year old who grew up surfing with her family in Hawaii. With a natural talent for the sport, she was well on her way to a successful career, until her life was completely upended after she lost her arm in a shark attack.

Her dream that had seemed so easily attainable now seemed almost impossible to achieve. Battling the physical and emotional scarring that the incident had caused, she felt an immense sense of grief and uncertainty.

However, she was determined to not let her injury stop her dreams and trained even harder to overcome her disability. Drawing on her faith and a spirit of determination, Bethany pushed through adversity.

In her book, Soul Surfer, Bethany expresses this sentiment saying, “Life is a lot like surfing… When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave…and if you have faith, anything is possible, anything at all.”

Just a month after the attack she returned to surfing. Within two years of the attack she won her first national surfing title and has gone on to receive many accolades in the sport.

More than that, she has inspired countless people to fight through adversity in pursuit of their dreams. While her journey was far more difficult than she could have ever imagined, her legacy and impact on the world have extended far beyond her wildest dreams.

In a world that is full of setbacks and unforeseen crises, take courage and know that sometimes the greatest potential is found on the other side of the greatest hardship.
